The only known photo of this sign was taken on 7 March 2009 in a laundromat on Main Street in Trumansburg, New York, by the Flickr user slithy-toves. See it on Flickr. It is not reproduced here because the photo belongs to the photographer.
Registration: Not found among the 1960 and 1961 Laundesigns registrations
Figure: A big-nosed man in a suit and tie holding a pistol to his temple
Rule on the sign: Not visible in the photo
Seen: Trumansburg, New York, March 2009
Why it belongs in the file
The headline is set in the same heavy gothic capitals as the other signs, the figure has the same big nose, small eyes and stick legs, and it sits on the same tall white panel Inferred. The same visit photographed HOWDY, NEIGHBOR, a registered Laundesign, on the laundromat wall (photo) Documented.
DON’T DO IT! does not appear in the copyright catalogs for 1960 or 1961. It may be a later design that was never registered, like the ad mascots, or a registration not yet found Inferred. Found 25 October 2026, the first sign confirmed outside New York City.
Where it hung
Every photo from that visit carries the same location tag on Main Street in Trumansburg, and the photographer described the place as a laundromat among old-fashioned shops on the main street Documented. The village’s laundromat today is the Colonial Laundromat at 16 East Main Street, so this is very likely the same building Inferred. A second Flickr user, finitor, photographed WE’RE SORRY and HOWDY, NEIGHBOR in a Trumansburg laundromat in 2011, so the set was still up two years later Documented. It was refitted with new machines by 2017, and recent photos show no Laundesigns on the walls. If you know this laundromat, or what happened to its signs, please say.
