Ryan Holiday – Episode 169

Just released book Ego is the Enemy.

  • Two mantras tattooed on him: The Obstacle is the Way & Ego is the Enemy
  • Work can become a drug that kills your quality of life.
  • Smart people create opportunities, instead of being reactive.
  • Generalized fame is overrated and detrimental, but selective fame, recognition by a select group, is a logical goal.
  • Ego can be the ruin of a person.
  • General Sherman – poise, not pose. The work put in over time long before the war. And retiring to happiness after, turning down offers in other fields.
  • vs Grant who lost everything to impress people after the war, running for president, and leading to financial ruin.
  • We work doing things we don’t like, to get money we don’t need, to impress people we don’t like.
  • “one cannot learn that which they think they already know.”
  • If you start believing in your greatness, it is the death of your creativity.
  • You’re never as good as they say you are, you’re never as bad as they say you are.
  • Howard Hughes as a cautionary tail for being a visionary.
  • First principles. Look at what you are trying to accomplish, and deconstruct it to the very basic principles that get you to that goal as quickly as possible.
  • Someone cannot frustrate you. You let yourself get frustrated.
  • We’re slowly choking the life out of free speech with social justice warriors.
  • Don’t fight most people, they’ll punch themselves out. Pick your battles wisely.
  • Limit your attacks on other people, before you water them down. Save your ammo for the right target.
  • Don’t just journal what happened that day, but what goal you were working towards.
